8 Landscaping Projects to Complete In December

|

It’s the last month of the year, and it is time to wrap up your gardening tasks and prepare for winter.

Here are some projects to complete ahead of the first day of winter:

  1. Protect evergreens. Wrap evergreen shrubs and trees with frost blankets or burlap to protect them from harsh winter wind and sun damage.
  2. Mulch garden beds. Don’t forget to add a 2-3 inch layer of mulch over garden beds to help protect plants from winter weather.
  3. Prune deciduous trees and shrubs. Prune trees and shrubs to remove dead or diseased branches and maintain their shape.
  4. Cover garden furniture. Cover with a tarp or waterproof covers to protect them from winter weather.
  5. Store garden tools. Be sure to clean and store garden tools properly to prevent rust and winter damage.
  6. Water shrubs and trees. If there is no snowfall and the soil is not frozen, continue to water shrubs and trees.
  7. Clean those gutters. Help protect your home from water damage by cleaning gutters and downspouts.
  8. Winterize your irrigation system. Turn off and drain your irrigation system to prevent damage from freezing.

Following these tips can help protect your garden and outdoor spaces from winter weather and prepare them for the spring.
